Making a Patent Deposit

A general overview of the process for making a patent deposit is given below. However, we strongly encourage all customers interested in storage for patenting purposes to contact us via email (info@cellbankaustralia.com) or phone (+61 2 8865 2850) so we can discuss your specific needs.

Check the suitability of you cell line for storage

In general, CellBank Australia can store human or animal cell lines or hybridomas that can be preserved in vapour phase liquid nitrogen without significant damage to the cells or loss of their properties or viability. The cells should also be able to be handled in PC1 or PC2 environments.

Please contact us if you have any queries regarding the suitability of your cell line for IDA storage with CellBank Australia.

Complete the deposit forms

Once you have determined your cell line is suitable for IDA storage with CellBank Australia, please complete and return the following forms:

  • A mandatory international deposit form. There are three possible forms. The form you need to complete depends on the type of deposit you are making:
    •  If this is an original deposit i.e., the cell line has not been previously deposited with CellBank Australia or any other IDA, then please complete Form BP/1.
    • If this is a new deposit, i.e., the cell line has previously been deposited with CellBank Australia or another IDA, then please complete Form BP/2 (if previously deposited with CellBank Australia) or Form BP/3 (if previously deposited with another IDA)

If you are a new customer, please also complete a Client Account Application Form.

Please scan and send the completed forms by email to CellBank Australia (info@cellbankaustralia.com). Please contact us if you have any questions when completing the forms.

Sign the storage agreement

Once we have processed your deposit and confirmed that the cell line is suitable for IDA storage with CellBank Australia, we will contact you with a copy of the IDA Storage Agreement. Please have the agreement signed by an individual with appropriate authority and return a copy via email to CellBank Australia. The original document should accompany the shipment.

Prepare the cell lines and arrange shipping

Cell lines submitted to CellBank Australia for IDA storage must be in the form of frozen cultures. The deposit should comprise a minimum of 12 identical samples in 1 mL cryovials with at least 4 million cells per vial.

Once we receive your signed storage agreement, we will contact you to arrange a mutually suitable date for shipping. Please note that the customer is responsible for organizing all aspects of the shipment. CellBank Australia can provide advice and assistance if required.

After shipping

Once CellBank Australia receives your shipment we will store the vials in vapour phase liquid nitrogen and then test the viability of your cell line. Where the cell line is found to be viable, CellBank Australia will issue a formal Deposit Receipt (Form BP/4, Form BP/5, or Form BP/6 - depending on the nature of the deposit) and Viability Statement (Form BP/9).

The viability test typically takes up to 15 business days to complete, although this may be longer, depending on the circumstances.

The Deposit Receipt includes the official accession number for the cell line.

At this stage, the deposit process is complete and an invoice for the deposit fee will be sent to you. The invoice should be paid within 30 days.
