Good Cell Culture Practice

Contamination of cell lines due to the presence of additional cell populations - either microbial or from other, unrelated cell lines – was first described in the 1960s. It remains a serious problem today, with 10-30% of cell lines believed to be affected worldwide. Awareness of the problem and good cell culture practice are essential to improve the quality of results obtained with cultured cells.

Scientist Survey Data Risk Analysis

Back in November 2013, CellBank Australia (Australia's only not-for-profit, national cell line repository) undertook an in-depth survey of actual cell culture practice in Australian and New Zealand research labs. Since then we have used survey data, contributed by 250 experts, to assess common cell culture risks and how these risks are managed in practice. Our analysis and recommendations are now available in a short report. The accepted article, titled "Is Cell Culture a Risky Business? Risk Analysis based on Scientist Survey Data," was published online in the International Journal of Cancer on 27 August 2015. Training recommendations for cell line reporting are included in the article.

How CellBank Australia Can Help

New Cell Line Shop Now Online

Last week CellBank Australia launched its very own cell line shop online. Here researchers can browse and search information on the more than 1,850 quality-validated cell lines that we distribute in Australia and New Zealand. Researchers who are based in those two countries can then buy those cell lines that suit their research purposes, using a secure online checkout.

To take a look around our shop, click here. To buy cell lines, you'll first need to register and create a profile. This can be done from our shop in around a minute.

If you are based outside of Australia and New Zealand and would like to buy our very own novel cell lines, please contact us to place an order offline (info@cellbankaustralia.com). Alternatively, please contact our overseas distributor, the European Collection of Cell Cultures (ECACC; Salisbury, UK).

Please note that CellBank Australia cannot distribute ECACC-supplied cell lines outside of Australia and New Zealand.
